Leaders Summit of the UN Global Compact and closing speech by Chancellor Angela Merkel

On June 15 and 16, the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit took place, bringing together numerous heads of state, government leaders, and key representatives from business and the United Nations virtually. Over more than 26 hours and across more than 100 global, regional, and local sessions with over 20,000 participants, the Leaders Summit was the largest virtual event ever held by the United Nations. It focused primarily on the private sector’s response to three unprecedented and interconnected global crises: the health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, global inequalities, and climate change.

Under the motto "Recover Better, Recover Stronger, Recover Together," the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the UN Global Compact took place, providing a platform for leaders from business, civil society, politics, and the United Nations to discuss the importance of collaboration and the role of public-private partnerships in enhancing corporate ambitions towards the implementation of the SDGs.

In her closing speech, Chancellor Angela Merkel emphasized the role of the UN Global Compact, the importance of global responsibility, and the necessity of collaboration based on the Global Sustainability Goals, the SDGs. "Accordingly, responsible corporate governance in the sense of the Global Compact proves to be forward-looking," Angela Merkel stated.
